This checker rates HDPE, polypropylene (PP-H) and PVDF for service against 20 common industrial chemicals across concentration and temperature breakpoints. Use it to shortlist a tank material before requesting an engineered quote.

Chemical Compatibility Checker

Indicative compatibility for HDPE, PP-H and PVDF tanks. Select your chemical, concentration and service temperature to see ratings for each material.

Material ratings

Indicative only. Compatibility is sensitive to trace contaminants, mixed-acid chemistry, abrasion and pressure cycling. Industrial Plastics engineering will confirm material selection against your full SDS, design temperature and service life on quote — including dual-laminate, lined and barrier-layer alternatives where required.

How the rating system works

Recommended means the material is published as suitable for the chemical at the selected concentration and temperature, with normal wall thickness and standard weld procedure. Limited means service is possible but typically requires extra wall margin, conservative weld inspection (DVS 2205 (tank design) and DVS 2207 (welding)-1), or a barrier-layer / liner; engineering review is recommended before specifying. Not recommended means the material is published as failing in this service — specify an alternative.

Where the chemistry is aggressive — concentrated sulfuric, nitric or hydrofluoric acid, or hot oxidising bleach — PVDF is typically the only thermoplastic option, and dual-laminate FRP with a PVDF or ECTFE barrier layer is the next step up for very high temperature or mixed-acid service. Industrial Plastics fabricates all three families to AS/NZS 4766 with DVS 2207 weld documentation; we routinely supply chemistry-confirmation letters when an asset owner’s audit or hazardous-area approval requires them.

Data caveats

The ratings shown are typical published values cross-referenced from major resin and tank-builder compatibility charts. They cover pure or near-pure chemistry at atmospheric pressure with continuous immersion. They do not account for: trace contaminants (sulfide, peroxide, free chlorine in dosing systems), mechanical abrasion (slurry service), pressure cycling, UV exposure, or mixed-acid chemistry where one component dominates corrosion. For final material selection on your project, share your SDS, expected operating cycle and any hazardous-area or potable-water approvals required, and engineering will issue a written recommendation with the quote.
