Short answer: yes. HDPE is resin identification code 2, it is accepted in kerbside recycling right across Australia, and it is one of the easiest plastics to reprocess. The longer answer is more useful, because recyclable means something different for a milk bottle than it does for a chemical tank.

Why HDPE recycles so well
HDPE is a thermoplastic: it melts and re-solidifies without significant chemical change, so it can be shredded, washed, re-pelletised and moulded again. It has a relatively low melting point of about 130°C, it is a single simple polymer rather than a blend, and everyday HDPE products such as bottles, crates and drums are usually made of nothing but HDPE, which keeps the waste stream clean. Multi-layer packaging and thermoset plastics, by contrast, cannot be remelted at all.
Recycled HDPE in Australia typically comes back as pipe, pallets, wheelie bins, crates, outdoor furniture and bollards. Bottle-to-bottle recycling also operates here for milk bottle grade resin.
The catch: recycling changes the material
Every time HDPE goes through a melt cycle, the polymer chains shorten a little and the material picks up contamination from whatever shared the waste stream. The practical effects for engineering use:
- Unknown pedigree. A batch of recycled resin can contain a mix of grades with different melt flow rates, stabiliser packages and colourants.
- Reduced and variable properties. Impact strength, stress crack resistance and long term strength all drift downward, and the drift is inconsistent batch to batch.
- Weld quality risk. Reliable extrusion and butt welding depends on knowing exactly what you are welding. Contaminated or mixed resin produces welds you cannot certify.
None of that matters for a park bench. All of it matters for a tank holding sodium hypochlorite above head height. Fabricated equipment like an HDPE tank is engineered to hold a specified chemical, at a specified concentration and temperature, for a design life measured in decades. The German DVS design and welding standards we work to assume documented, traceable material properties, and that is only possible with virgin certified sheet, where the manufacturer states the grade, the batch and the properties, and we carry that traceability through to the finished vessel. So when we say our fabrications are not made from recycled resin, that is not a gap in our green credentials. It is the same reason a structural engineer does not specify mystery steel.

The sustainability case is the service life
The most environmentally sound plastic product is the one you do not have to replace. Well designed HDPE fabrications routinely run for 20 years or more, they do not corrode, and they need no protective coatings or cathodic protection. HDPE is also repairable: because it welds, a damaged tank or fitting can often be extrusion welded back into service instead of scrapped. Our own workshop offcuts are clean, single grade and uncontaminated, exactly the feedstock recyclers want, and they go back into the recovery stream rather than to landfill.
