Industrial Plastics recently supplied Geocell to a customer for use in rebuilding an access road that was significantly damaged due to erosion.

Erosion control using geocell

The steep terrain at the site caused high speed water flows during downpours, resulting in the need for continuous repair of the access road using earthworks. Geocell was identified as a long-term solution to the customers problem as it provides excellent soil stabilisation for erosion control.

Advantages

  1. ncreased Load-Bearing Capacity: Geocells provide a stable structure when filled with soil or other materials. They distribute load forces laterally, reducing vertical stress on the underlying soil. This increased load-bearing capacity allows geocells to support heavy loads, such as vehicles and equipment, while minimizing soil deformation and erosion.
  2. Enhanced Soil Stability: Geocells confine soil within their cells, preventing lateral movement and soil loss due to erosion. By stabilizing the soil, geocells reduce surface runoff and prevent the migration of fine particles, silt, or sediment downstream, thus protecting water quality.
  3. Vegetation Growth Support: Geocells can be filled with topsoil or other growth media, providing a stable environment for vegetation establishment. The cells prevent soil compaction and improve water infiltration, allowing roots to penetrate and anchor in the soil more effectively. This promotes the growth of vegetation, which further enhances erosion control by binding the soil together with their roots.
  4. Flexibility and Adaptability: Geocells can be easily customized and installed to match the topography of the terrain. They are flexible and can conform to irregular surfaces, making them suitable for various applications, including slope protection, channel lining, and retaining walls. Geocells are also lightweight and easy to handle, reducing installation time and costs.
  5. Longevity and Durability: Geocells are typically made from high-quality materials, such as HDPE, which are resistant to weathering, chemicals, and biological degradation. They have a long service life and can withstand harsh environmental conditions, including exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, temperature fluctuations, and moisture. This durability ensures long-term effectiveness in erosion control applications.
  6. Cost-Effective Solution: Geocells can be a cost-effective erosion control solution compared to traditional methods. Their lightweight nature reduces transportation costs, and their ease of installation helps save time and labor expenses. Additionally, geocells can be filled with locally available soil or recycled materials, reducing the need for extensive excavation or importing of materials.
  7. Environmental Benefits: Geocells promote sustainable erosion control practices. They minimize the use of concrete and other non-biodegradable materials, which can have negative environmental impacts. Geocell installations can also support ecological restoration by facilitating vegetation growth and habitat creation.
